In Korea, rubbish must be sorted by type. Here are the basic rules for general waste, food waste and recycling.

General waste goes in volume-based bags

Non-recyclable general waste goes into the volume-based bags designated by your district or city. The bags are sold at convenience stores and supermarkets, and bags from another area cannot be used. Rubbish in ordinary bags may not be collected and can lead to a fine.

Food waste is separate

Food waste goes separately into special bags or dedicated bins (some use a card or sticker system). Drain the liquid first. In many areas, hard items such as bones, shells, eggshells and fruit pits count as general waste, not food waste.

Recycling: clean and sorted by type

Separate plastic, cans, glass bottles, paper and plastic film. Empty and rinse containers, and remove labels if you can. Remove tape from boxes and flatten them. Many areas collect clear PET bottles separately.

Collection days, times and places differ by neighborhood. Ask your building manager or neighbors, or check your district office website. Large items such as furniture and appliances must be reported to the district office as bulky waste and put out with a sticker.
