When to apply
You must apply for an extension before your expiry date passes. You can apply ahead of the expiry date, so mark it on your calendar and prepare early. When you can start applying and how long processing takes may differ by visa status, so check on HiKorea or call ☎ 1345.
If you pass the expiry date, you may have to pay a fine, and it can count against you when you re-enter Korea or apply for a visa later. If you applied in time, keep the receipt, and confirm when you apply whether you may stay while waiting for the result.
How to apply
Depending on your visa status, you may be able to apply online through HiKorea e-application. If not, book a visit on HiKorea and apply at the immigration office that covers where you live. Appointments can fill up quickly at busy times, so book early.
If you work under the Employment Permit System (E-9), your employer may need to complete a procedure at the job center before you can extend your stay. As the expiry date approaches, ask your company contact or your local job center early.
What to prepare
You generally need your passport, residence card, the integrated application form, and the fee. Documents specific to your visa status are added on top. For example, workers may be asked for an employment contract or proof of employment, students for a certificate of enrollment and grade records, and you may also be asked for proof of residence such as a lease contract.
The required documents and the fee can change. Before applying, check the guidance for your visa status on HiKorea or ask ☎ 1345, and prepare from the latest list.
Things to remember
If your address, workplace, or passport details change, you must report it within the set period. Your past reports may be reviewed when you apply for an extension, so keep them up to date.
Be careful of anyone who asks for a lot of money while promising a guaranteed extension. If you want someone to prepare the paperwork, check that they are a registered administrative agent (haengjeongsa), and check your application result yourself on HiKorea.
In K-lifeon’s "Visa/Labor Information" you can browse new notices from HiKorea and the Employment Permit System (EPS). Check it now and then so you do not miss rule changes.
